Need Microsoft Office on Ubuntu? Install the Official Web Apps

Notice: This post is more than a year old. It may be outdated.

office web app

It’s not everyone’s cup of joe, but Microsoft Office and its family of finicky file formats are a mainstay of many working and educational environments — for better or worse.

Reading, editing and saving to these proprietary formats is sort of possible on Ubuntu using the LibreOffice suite of apps. Writer, Calc and Impress all boast varying degrees of Microsoft Office file interoperability, though in my own real world experience (thankfully brief) it’s not perfect.

For the times you can’t go without using Office file formats (as ideological as most of us are about open standards, we shouldn’t be blind to practicalities) but you’ve no desire to purchase a full MS Office licence to run through WINE, the official set of Microsoft Office Online web apps are the perfect answer.

Install Microsoft Office Online Apps in Ubuntu

To make accessing these online versions easier from the Ubuntu desktop, the ‘Linux Web Apps project’ has created a small, unofficial installer that adds web app shortcuts (“glorified bookmarks”) to your application launcher.

microsoft-office-web-apps

These are nothing more fancy than shortcuts to the respective Microsoft web app that opens in your default system browser.  Sound nifty? You get application shortcuts for:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook
  • OneDrive
  • Calendar
  • OneNote
  • People

The package also creates a new application category housing the links, letting you view the shortcuts separately from other applications as well as under the regular “office” apps directory.

Are these essential? Not really. Are they useful? Depends on your workflow. But is it nice to have the option? For sure.

You can grab the .deb installer containing the links from the link below and is suitable for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and later.

Other Alternatives

A similar alternative is to install the official Office Online web applications from the Chrome Web Store, then add the app launcher to Linux. This will still create launchable shortcuts for them in the Dash, but ones that can be set to open in their own window frames and forgo the need to install any third-party packages.

Similarly,  Google recently folded in full Office capabilities (thanks to its purchase of QuickOffice) into its own Docs, Slides and Sheets applications, retired the QuickOffice Android application and rebranded the companion Chrome extension.

If you’re a heavy Google Drive/Docs user, this may be the better solution for you.

  • Hi All, for those who want to get to their work mail 'https://outlook.office365.com', this can be edited quite easily.

In 'Computer', navigate to '/usr/share/applications/'. Right click on the 'Microsoft Outlook' icon and select 'properties'. You will then want to change the 'Command' text under the 'Basic' tab to point tooutlook.office365.com instead of outlook.com

    That's it!

Can anyone tell me how can I make the launcher in the second picture?

This is great but I can't get it to take me to Outlook for my organisation. Word and Excel asked me which account I would like to sign in with but not Outlook. Does anyone have a solution for this?

This is great stuff! I think that people don't give enough credit to the web based editors of Office. I actually use them on a regular basis and find them as easy to use at the regular desktop application. Sure its not as feature rich or powerful, but it does get the job done.

Also I think there are ways of installing older versions of MS office on Linux. Sucks that Microsoft hasn't released desktop applications for linux, but hopefully with Visual Studio now available that will start to change!

I was wondering when M$ will stop being selfish and releasing REAL apps for Linux and not this web based crap......

When are other key players like LibreOffice going to make a fully portable JS/HTML version, now that ASM.JS and other technologies make it feasible to make a fully-portable application for Linux, ChromeOS/FirefoxOS etc...

The web based editors are actually really capable. I think that the MS team has done a really great job with making the experience as close to the desktop versions as possible. I use the full suite of MS office 365 through Firefox/chrome on my Ubuntu desktop :D

That solve almost all DOCX <-> Libre Office issues! I like Libre Office and ODF files in my daily work, but ok I'm an exception...

                                Hi!
Thanks for the tutorial first of all.
Do I need an extra license for the Microsoft Office Web Apps or can I use an existent office-license?

For your O365 (E1) account - go to http://outlook.office365.com instead. That seems to be the only path I can find.

Does not seem to allow me to log onto my O365 (E1) plan, but I may be missing something. The app(shortcuts) installed perfectly well, and they seem to be doing the right thing; but I notice that they're directing me to the live.com page for authentication, and perhaps that's the issue. I do not know how to modify these icons to point to the correct site (SharePoint) as I'm a linux noob.

how do i open local files directly into these web apps i.e how do i associate local office files to open directly in these web apps when i double click on them?

                                                  • Avatar

SoftMaker Office for Linux IMHO is an excellent option when it comes to compatibility with Microsoft Office formats. I can open and save Word, Excel and PowerPoint files faithfully in both directions, no trouble ever yet with formatting losses. I also like its small size (means low memory consumption and faster loading times), its broad scope of features and easy-to-use interface. Definitely worth a try!

kind of useless because office is usually integrated into a bunch of stuffo on the desktop... file compatibility is only maybe 25% of the issue.

rdesktop to windoze computer is hard to beat for this functionality.

                                                                            • Avatar

                                                                                • Avatar

Actually i installed office 07 with playonlinux/wine on ubuntu but the only programs that run are word powerpoint and excel, which is not bad at all but for example i have a lot of problems with word because i frequently use formulas and equations and the program crashes if you use that kind of functions, so this is why i dont see this as an alternative itself, just a workaround for simple doc editing, in my case. I find these web apps a lot more helpful but i dont think you can use them without connection, so this forces me to keep windows on my laptop :( i really hope one day Microsoft will release some kind of support for linux because im pretty damn sure they wont be launching office for linux haha

                                                                                • Avatar

Still vaguely hope that rumours earlier this year that a native Linux version of MS Office is on the cards (however unlikely that may be) may still come true, as Microsoft's push towards cloud applications does not solve all problems. For example, Wordfast Classic (translation software) relies on a locally installed version of Word. Alternative translation software is available, including a Linux compatible standalone version of Wordfast, but that pulls you out of the Word document on which you are working, so that you cannot see the context of a sentence without switching back and forth between Wordfast and Word. That, and the absence of any translation line counting software for invoicing purposes in Linux unfortunately still makes it necessary to keep a version of Windows installed. Stupidly, the translation line counting software available also relies on a locally installed version of Word and you need Windows (does not work under Wine), but at least Wordfast Classic (which runs inside MS Word) works under CrossOver Linux. Business requirements still keep the Microsoft installation chains in place to some extent for some of us :-(

                                                                                    • Avatar

                                                                                      • Avatar

Libre office is prb fine piece of software once u get used to it, but if ur a consultant like me every font counts. BTW: I am much more comfortable with WPS, but would rather have full office (even paid) on my Lubuntu!
